Prevalence and Impact of Diabetes Among People Infected With SARS-CoV-2

Objectives: Assess the prevalence of diabetes and its impact on ill patients' faith as of late march 2020

Strength of evidence: Moderate (meta-analysis, large population, only hospitalized patients, validation by rt-qPCR)

Methods/publication type:

  • Meta-analysis/letter to the editor

  • 12 studies, 2108 patients validated by RT-qPCR

  • Average age 49.6

Highlights :

  • No higher risk of contracting the disease in Italy and China (same or lower prevalence among patients than among the general population and population matched by age)

  • Only hospitalized patients, diabetes treatments might also explain these results

  • Higher risk of complications (RR = 2.26)

  • In Italy, higher fatality rate in diabetics with death RR = 1.75
